From happy, because of them playing games with the faces, to sad, because of the emotions that Simon hides from Kathy. It also makes me philosophical because we all think were unique but in the end were all here trying to figure out the meaning of life and everything around us. Either we hope to find it at the end of a cigarette or we hope to find it in the people around us. I frequently find myself revisiting this song every few weeks and then play it on repeat for a few days and soon go back to listening to some other musician. ![]() While not everyone was actively protesting the war, the events did make them question things. It also led to a general distrust of the government and estiblistments. And the focus this song has on traveling and various locations in America serves as a reminder that these feelings and attitudes were not specific to one area, but rather spread across all of America and shared by almost an entire younger population. Which was very large at the time because they were the know-grown babies of the Baby Boom) 9 Electrogenic 2 years ago I think this is my favorite or close to my favorite Paul Simon song. The way Ive always seen it, is that the road trip in the song acts as a double metaphor for America and also his relationship with Kathy. Both the relationship and the America ideal start with giddy excitement and optimism etc. Its the arc of a love affair that he speaks of in Hearts and Bones. EstherCarney 5 months ago I love this song, it reminds me of lying on the couch at my parents in Ireland listening to the album. Love love love this song. JordanTaylor 3 years ago Bernie Sanders brought me here. Rich Flinchbaugh 6 months ago I agree. I think this song is about what it is like to be human and want something you are missing but you dont know what it is. I hate living in America, but the song has such deep emotion and meaning that I seem to forget such by every listen. I listened to a lot of music during that time, but there was no single song that captured the range of my emotion as well as this one. To see our country is by turns liberating, magical, saddening, lonely, and hopeful. Im empty and aching and I dont know why so powerfully and concisely sums up what it is to be young and on the road.
